Company Info Established in 1973 by Alex Grabenstein, the Vintage Lumber Company's objective was to reuse old wood obtained from dismantled derelict barns and other agricultural buildings in central Maryland. An unwitting pioneer in the recycling business, Alex felt this reclaimed lumber would provide a high quality and low cost resource of building materials for new construction. Originally intended for use structurally, it was quickly discovered that this historic material had more widespread appeal decoratively. Many customers used the weathered beams and barn siding as is for the rustic "clubroom" look, but soon the interest shifted to a more finished product. In 1978, a 5000 square foot planing mill was built on the farm where Alex grew up. Ultimately capable of processing 5000 board feet of lumber into tongue and groove flooring and paneling per week, this upgrade brought in a more sophisticated clientele. New wood flooring with character that complemented the antique was introduced and allowed our customers to add rustic patina to their homes at a much lower cost . Business grew throughout the 1980's, and with it an increase in production, maintenance, and warehouse facilities; and the establishment of a sawmill. The focus increasingly shifted to the production of random width plank flooring, and the market became national in scope. The flooring production mill was moved to its present location in Woodsboro, MD in 1992. The 18,000 square foot building housed all finished inventory, a 1600 square foot showroom and administrative offices, as well as the mill. During 1998, several work sheds and a 30,000 board foot capacity kiln were built to speed the processing of antique lumber. In mid 1999, a new flooring production line was installed, quadrupling our capacity as well as dramatically enhancing product quality and user friendliness. Since these machines now consume the area once containing our inventory, a new 12,000 square foot headed warehouse was built to accomodate the rough sawn lumber and milled flooring. The Vintage Lumber Company now encompasses nearly 60,000 square feet under roof over more than 11 acres of land in 2 locations. With an antique lumber inventory of over 1 million board feet, an extensive new lumber inventory, the saw- milling, kiln-drying and finished solid flooring production capacity of 50,000 square feet per week, over 35 hard working employees and an extensive national distributor network, the Vintage Lumber Company is one of the largest and most respected manufacturers of antique re-milled and rustic new wood flooring in the country. Still owned and operated by Alex, with an average employee tenure of over 10 years, the Vintage Lumber Company's uncompromising commitment to quality, value and service is the hallmark of our business. |
